I think I may have found the answer to this but I wont know for awhile. In Icewind Dale 2, I am playing with a Scorcerer as one of my characters. Hes a 10th level Sorcerer and I believe he is capable of casting 5th level spells. With a sorcerer , at least in Icewind dale 2 , there not like Wizards that learn spells. They have a preset list of spells you can choose from evertime you level up . Now, all was going well until I reached my 8th level of Sorcery. I now have 3rd, 4th and 5th level spells I was able to choose but I cannot use. There listed on the bottom of my screen with all my other spells but there greyed out. when I click on them it says, this spell is beyond the castors casting ability. This sucks...
Now I thought it may of been the armor I was wearing, so I took all the armour off and still no luck.. On my level ups where it allows me to choose attributes I have been increasing my inteligence / I thought that was important for Sorcerers. Now I have been browzing a lot of forums searching for an answer to this. I found one small thread in a forum where someone said that having to low of a chaisma is why the spells are greyed out. I thought Charisma had more to deal with how well people liked you or being a good leader. I dont have the directions for this game otherwise I would of read up on it. I know you guys are big into RPG's and may know the answer. ANd I believe Ein you really like to use Magic a lot in these games if I remember right. ANy thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I figured it out.. The charisma is important for the sorcerers and the inteligence is important for the Wizzards. I went back to an earlier save like 15 minutes from where I currently was. I upgraded his charizma and the 3rd level spells appeard. the 4th and 5th ones are still greyed out so I will have to keep uping the char. on the next few levelups.

No I never read DragonLance. Is it good? Maybe Ill have to check it out. Yeah, I dont know much about illusionists either. I usually only take one character of magical background with my party and its usally a Wizzard. This is my first time of using a Sorcerer. SO I never had the opportunity to play a lot of the other roles. Basically just to lazy to read up on them. So if your bored some night and want to right up a speel on illusionists or any other magical class. Feel free..But dont go out of your way.

Nah.. the thing with Illusionists and 2nd Edition was the dreaded "System Shock" rolls. If I throw a flaming frying pan at you and you "KNOW" that you couldn't avoid getting hit.. and at the moment of impact you have to roll "System Shock" to determine the amount of damage your body "believes" it would take from past experiences. In real life (of your player character) you take a set amount of damage that you believe you'd get if you in fact got hit. Now look at this from a different perspective.. You are some type of warrior.. dumb as dirt but very high strength/constitution (as in 101 HP.. and 18/00 strength at 17th level) my little 'ole Illusionist at 6th level casts a spell that drops a boulder on you 3 times your size. You roll for "system shock" and the damage you "think" you got is 190. You're dead from a heart attack in the game. They were unbalanced as I believe the sorcery class is still. You could try to disbelieve the spell and suffer only half damage but again.. you are dumb as dirt unless your wisdom could benefit you with a past experience. That's an oxymoron because you couldn't have survived in the past to "know" that the spell was a fake when it was just cast on you.

Hey, did you beat it yet?

I loved reading the short stories in Morrowind and also some in the original IWD game about the Necromancer you had to kill. It was cool.
