You are running Vista 32bit (or 64?).. so what did you do to fix your sound and that EXE error you had playing multiplayer? On the machine you used to play COD4.. you are using the built-in AC97 sound the board has right? or does it have an installed sound card like say.. a Creative Sound Blaster add-in card?

Well lets start from the top. I have vista 32bit. I dont build or play around with my computer unless I have too, so im not sure if my sound is onboard or a card. I thinks its onboard though. Its a sigmatel. When I did a search for it all I found was drivers for it and no mention of a sound card.
The problem with the sound and the .exe error I had frustrated me for a long time. I then found a solution through countless hours of reading on this. ANd that was plugging in my headset. If the headset was plugged in I got no error. This has since been fixed with the service pack 1 for vista. I can now play the game through my speakers and all works well.
